Driver to Be Charged After Woman Fatally Struck in April

Winnipeg Police CrestA 25-year-old Steinbach man faces drunk driving charges after a woman was struck and killed while walking downtown last spring.

On April 5, Amy Gilbert, 23, was crossing the eastbound lanes of Broadway at Donald Street when she was struck by an eastbound vehicle at around 5:30 p.m.

She was taken to hospital in unstable condition, but later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver was arrested at the time, but was released without charge.

After a lengthly investigation, police arrested the man on Monday and will charge him with impaired driving causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

He was released on a promise to appear. His name hasn’t been released as charges have yet to be formally laid.
