University of Manitoba BisonsWINNIPEG — It wasn’t so much of a challenge than a total sweep on Thursday night at the University of Manitoba.

The Bisons hosted the 24th annual Duckworth Challenge against the rival University of Winnipeg Wesmen in women’s and men’s volleyball.

Manitoba’s women defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-22) in the first game, and the men took the match 3-2 (25-16, 25-16, 21-25, 26-28, 15-13).

“It was always a close game,” said Bison men’s head coach Garth Pischke. “It was a great crowd and a great atmosphere. It’s always a good match, so the win gives us bragging rights in the city for the year, but it’s just good to win matches like that that are so emotional.”

Manitoba now holds a winning Duckworth Challenge overall record of 13-6-5 in the contest’s 24 year history.

The Duckworth Challenge will be completed tonight with basketball at the Duckworth Centre. The women’s game is at 6 p.m. and men play at 8 p.m. CT. All games will count in the Canada West standings, as they are regular season conference matches.
