Scammers are targeting Manitoba Hydro customers and demanding immediate payment.

The public utility issued a warning Friday, saying several customers have received phone calls from people claiming to work for Hydro. The callers ask a few questions and then state the customer’s account is in arrears.

They also provide the victim with several payment options, including credit card, PayPal, and Western Union. Threats are sometimes made that power will be shut off if payment isn’t received in a timely manner.

Manitoba Hydro says if you receive one of these phone calls or have any doubts about the call’s authenticity, hang up immediately. Such calls can be reported to Manitoba Hydro, the local police non-emergency phone number, as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
