Driver Killed in Stolen Vehicle Crash West of Winnipeg

Winnipeg Police CrestWhat began as a vehicle pursuit in Westwood Wednesday night ended with the driver succumbing to his injuries after crashing in Headingley.

Winnipeg police were called to the 700 block of Cavalier Drive just after 11 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle used in a break and enter in the neighbouring block.

Police began pursuing the vehicle in the area of Portage Avenue and Moray Street, but later aborted near William Clement Parkway and Grant Avenue when Air 1 took over tracking the suspects.

The police helicopter tracked the vehicle heading west on Roblin Boulevard and then south on Wescana Street, where it crashed into the ditch in the RM of Headingley.

One suspect was arrested a short distance away after fleeing, while the driver died in hospital after being transported in critical condition.

Police say the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the evening and was used in a commercial break and enter.

Manitoba RCMP are investigating the crash as they hold jurisdiction over the area.
