Winnipeg Wine FestivalTaking a trip to Chile simply for the wine is out of reach for most people (unless you’re a wine columnist), so this year’s Winnipeg Wine Festival is the closest experience you’re going to get.

The Wines of Chile is this year’s theme for the festival, which begins today and runs until May 2.

More than 500 wines from 135 wineries are featured at the public tastings this year — many of which are available for the first time in Manitoba.

“Wines of Chile is thrilled to be the theme country for this year’s Winnipeg Wine Festival,” said Alana Dickson, western Canada manager of Wines of Chile.

“There has been an exciting evolution in Chilean wine since we were the theme region last, and we look forward to sharing this with festival-goers at this great event.”

More than 9,000 people are expected to attend the educational seminar and the public tasting evenings on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 from 7-10 p.m. and the Saturday matinee tasting from 1-4 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wine Festival is an annual fundraising event for Special Olympics Manitoba — making it the organization’s No. 1 fundraiser of the year.
