Manitoba Hydro is warning residential and business customers to be vigilant about a phone scam currently making the rounds.

The public utility says several customers have received phone calls that appear to come from Hydro demanding immediate payment.

Hydro says the call originates from a toll-free number and asks the caller a few questions before telling them their account is in arrears.

The customer is provided with payment options, which include making a payment through a local retailer (often Safeway/Sobeys), paying through a PayPal account, wiring a cash payment via Western Union, or providing a credit card number.

If you receive one of these phone calls or have any doubts about the call’s authenticity, hang up immediately. Report the call to Manitoba Hydro, the local police non-emergency phone number at (204) 986-6222, as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Questions about your Manitoba Hydro account can be directed to (204) 204-480-5900 or 1-888-624- 9376.
