Winnipeg-based Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is calling for donations to help earthquake survivors in Nepal.
Together with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and Lutheran Church–Canada, the organizations say the donations will support the work of the Kathmandu-based emergency team launched to provide relief.
LWF staff members distributed tarpaulins, hygiene kits and ready-made food to about 400 families in Kathmandu over the weekend, despite being displaced from their homes themselves.
“There was a five-storey building which collapsed,” said Laxman Niroula, an information and technology officer for LWF based in Kathmandu, Nepal. “There were eight people in it. We pulled out two people. Others managed to get out on their own.”
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the region on April 25, leaving massive destruction in its wake. Many thousands more have been left homeless and in need of urgent relief.
