The victim in a weekend homicide in St. Boniface has been identified by Winnipeg police.
Dorothy Dykens, 89, died after injuries sustained in the 400 block of Tremblay Street. Police originally responded to a wellbeing call in the early morning hours of May 17.
They found the caller to be intoxicated and took her into custody. An injured dog was also found inside in the residence and taken to a veterinary hospital.
Dykens was found in a nearby residence after police canvassed the area.
Police say the accused and victim were acquaintances and sometime between the evening of May 16 and 1:30 a.m. on the 17th, the accused stabbed the woman multiple times. She then allegedly returned home and attacked the dog.
Melissa Joyce Gabriel, 35, of Winnipeg faces several charges, including manslaughter. She remains in custody.
