WINNIPEG — A 55-year-old man badly injured in an explosion Monday morning in St. Boniface remains in critical condition.

Joe St. Laurent was working inside a storage container behind Ken’s Carpets on Archibald Street when the unit exploded at around 9:30 a.m.

It’s unclear what ignited the blaze, but Winnipeg firefighters had it under control shortly after arriving on scene.

Plumes of smoke could be seen from across the city and area residents reported hearing a loud “boom” from several blocks away.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner, Workplace Safety and Health and members of the arson unit are investigating.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.
