Police Warn of Telephone Scam Targeting Credit Cards

June 16, 2015 3:22 PM | News

Winnipeg Police CrestWinnipeg police are warning the public about a solicitation scam targeting credit card information.

Police say the caller says he or she is with a law enforcement agency, such as the RCMP, local police or the Central Intelligence Agency.

The caller then asks for credit card information to settle an outstanding criminal matter. In some instances, a 613 area code is displayed on the caller ID screen.

“At no time should anyone provide requested information such as this. No criminal matter could be dealt with in this manner and no legitimate law enforcement agency would attempt to convince you otherwise,” police said in a release.

Police say anyone who receives such a call should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
