Production on a new original film will begin in Winnipeg next week

“Menorca” is a project by Farpoint Films, who will shoot in the city and throughout Manitoba starting June 22.

“It’s the kind of film you’d never be able to make with a large budget because it’s such a strange and unusual story,” said writer and director John Barnard. “By virtue of that uniqueness and the characters within, I think people will really connect with it.”

Menorca is a drama about a hedonistic soccer mom that embarks on a strange journey of self-discovery and seeks to reconnect with her estranged son by returning his pet rock back to the island of Menorca, Spain.

The cast includes lead Tammy Gillis, Sheila Campbell, Dorothy Carroll, Aaron Merke, Logan Creran, Krystle Snow, Talia Pura, and Michael O’Sullivan. Other cast members have yet to be announced.

“Created by an all Manitoban cast and crew, Menorca will showcase the province’s fertile talent base while creating fantastic employment and training opportunities,” said Carole Vivier, Manitoba Film & Music CEO and film commissioner.

The film will also shoot some scenes in Spain before premiering in 2016. Local production is expected to wrap up by July 10.
