WINNIPEG — A horse racing jockey who may never walk again has the support of her colleagues and community when they host a fundraising social in her honour in a couple weeks.
Alyssa Selman, 29, was racing at Assiniboia Downs on June 27 when her horse stumbled and she was thrown to the ground. She suffered a serious back injury that required surgery the following day. She is currently recovering at the Health Sciences Centre.
On Sunday, July 19, the Downs will host a social to raise funds for Selman and her family to assist in her road to recovery. Tickets are $15 and go on sale tonight at the guest services booth, Assiniboia Downs general office, VLT cashiers or the Horsemen’s Bookkeeper.
Trust funds have been setup for Selmen’s two children at the Assiniboine Credit Union and Access Credit Union. Donations can be made to the “Alyssa Selman Trust Fund” at any branch in the province. A trust fund is also being established at one of the major banks and the information will be posted at ASDowns.com once it has been completed.
The social will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight on the main floor of Assiniboia Downs, 3975 Portage Avenue.
