A 78-year-old Winnipeg cyclist has finished his western Canadian solo bike tour, completing a 2,231 km journey to raise funds for the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation.
John Wichers will be welcomed home today at the Rehabilitation Centre (633 Wellington Avenue), cycling directly from his overnight stop in Portage la Prairie.
Wichers started his ride on June 10 in Vancouver with a goal to raise $30,000. Funds raised will be used to purchase 10 specialized Freedom Concepts bikes for 10 children living with disabilities and special needs. One child in Winnipeg has already received a specialized bike through this fundraising endeavour.
As of Monday, Wichers had raised $23,000. Donations can still be made online at crf.mb.ca or by calling (204) 453-9838.
The Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation is dedicated to helping children living with disabilities and special needs residing in Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Nunavut and parts of Saskatchewan.
Wichers will arrive for his homecoming at 2:30 p.m.
