WINNIPEG — Find yourself some water this weekend — you’re going to need it.

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba, warning of humidex values approaching 40 this weekend.

“Daytime high temperatures near 30 will combine with high humidity to create humidex values approaching 40,” the statement reads. “The heat and humidity will not subside much at night with temper.”

Winnipeg’s forecasted high today and Saturday is 30°C, with Sunday predicted to reach 32°C. Beginning the work week on Monday will see another high of 30°C.

The forecaster says in addition to the heat and humidity, hazy and smokey skies from forest fires will likely be present, possibly resulting in reduced air quality at times.

Infants, young children and the elderly are most at risk from heat illnesses. Drinking plenty of liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty can decrease your risk of dehydration, the forecaster says.
