Gimli Film Festival — What’s On at the Beach

Gimli Film FestivalThe 15th annual Gimli Film Festival begins Thursday, July 22 and some retro classics are in store for movie buffs on the beach.

The 35-foot outdoor screen on the shores of Lake Winnipeg will feature six films as part of the RBC Sunset Screenings.

Here’s what you can expect at this year’s film festival:

Wednesday, July 22, 10 p.m. — Rocky Horror Picture Show – 40th Anniversary – Opening night begins with a flamboyant bang, as cult-classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, comes to Gimli Beach! Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick play newlyweds forced to pay a visit to the bizarre mansion of Dr. Frank-N- Furter (Tim Curry).

Thursday, July 23, 10 p.m. — Labyrinth – 29th Anniversary. Bring kids of all ages to the beach for Jim Henson’s classic adventure, Labyrinth. This mythical journey by the creator of the Muppets features musician David Bowie and a young Jennifer Connelly.

Friday, July 24, 10 p.m. — Monty Python and the Holy Grail – 40th Anniversary – Grim circumstances prevail in this classic tale of the Middle Ages by hilarious comedy troupe Monty Python, starring John Cleese and directed by iconic film director Terry Gilliam.

Friday, July 24, LATE NIGHT — Alien – 35th Anniversary – Experience the terror of Alien at our midnight chiller! Ridley Scott’s film is a masterpiece of extraterrestrial horror, starring Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, and Sir Ian Holm as the ever- disturbing android, Ash.

Saturday, July 25, 10 p.m. — Jurassic Park – 15th Anniversary – Get ready for raptors and T-rex to storm the beach on Saturday night, when the original Jurassic Park hits the big screen! Starring Laura Dern and Jeff Goldbloom, the whole family can experience this classic tale by Steven Spielberg.

Sunday, July 26, 10 p.m. — Dr. Strangelove – 50th Anniversary – This Stanley Kubrick film is a dark cold-war parody about “what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button”. It features the comedic genius Peter Sellers in multiple roles, and George C. Scott as Jack Ripper, the U.S. Air Force General who goes insane.
