Seven Oaks General Hospital has partnered with a Chinese medical fitness centre to open the country’s first such facility.

The Wellness Institute led the development with the hospital in Rizhao City, Shandong Province, which was formerly used as the reception centre for water sports events at the 2008 Olympics.

The multi-year agreement has the Winnipeg-based institute licensed to commercialize its expertise and brand in China.

“This is global recognition for the Wellness Institute and the credit goes to our community, which had the foresight to plan and build a facility in 1996 that is now the model for facilities in China,” said Seven Oaks General Hospital president and CEO Carrie Solmundson.

“China, like Canada, is grappling with rising incidence of chronic disease that is rooted in sedentary lifestyles, poor nutrition, and other unhealthy lifestyle behaviours.”

The 80,000 square foot facility opens to its members this week, but Canada Wellness Institute will continue to provide management training and advice with experts on site for several months.
