WINNIPEG — NDP MLA Peter Bjornson has resigned from his post as representing the Gimli constituency.
“I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family, and to seeing what future opportunities lie ahead,” Bjornson said in a statement. “Serving the Gimli constituency for the past 12 years has been an amazing honour, and I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve accomplished together.”
Bjornson was first elected as the MLA for Gimli in 2003, and was re-elected in 2007 and 2011.
During his time in public office, he served as minister of education, citizenship and youth under then-Premier Gary Doer. Under Premier Greg Selinger, Bjornson was minister of entrepreneurship, training and trade, as well as minister of housing and community development. Most recently, he served as minister of education and advanced learning.
“Peter has been a valuable member of our team, both as a veteran minister and as a dedicated advocate for his constituents,” Selinger said. “I wish him all the best as he embraces new opportunities in the future.”
