Winnipeg Police CrestWINNIPEG — Two people have been charged in what Winnipeg police say was a deliberate act of arson to a St. Vital home on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 1st 100 block of Fifth Avenue at around 5 a.m. for a fire and possible explosion.

Police have learned the fire was deliberately set in cooperation with the homeowners and the suspect would be compensated.

It’s believed a 26-year-old man had broken into the home and fled after becoming injured. He was found in the 1100 block of Smith Street with serious injuries, and is now in hospital in critical condition.

Todd Arthur Vandal, 40, has been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and arson with disregard for human life.

A 32-year-old woman is facing the same charges and was released on a promise to appear.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-2857 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
