White chairs popping up across Winnipeg are meant to be sat in, but they’re also a symbol to begin the discussion on the city’s future urban design development.
The Chair Your Idea competition was launched Thursday at The Forks, where 17 design ideas by Winnipeg celebrities and community leaders were revealed.
The competition is open to all citizens for a $25 registration fee to submit their creative initiative in 140 characters or less, and contribute to one white chair for public use between now and September 17.
The winning ideas will be judged by a jury and a winner announced on September 19 during a downtown block party.
One-thousand chairs around town will seek to gather 1,000+ design ideas and raise $30,000 to make the winning one a reality.
The chairs on display have the ideas of their celebrity counterpart written on them and will be cared for by participating local businesses for the duration of the three-week competition period.
The ideas and those participating can be found on the Chair Your Idea website.
