Alzheimer Society of ManitobaA popular program by the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is expending to six locations across Winnipeg.

Minds in Motion unites families and communities, combining physical activity, socialization and mental stimulation for people living with early to mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease, or other dementias.

“People are responding very positively to the inclusive community programming,” said Maria Mathews, manager of family education for the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

The new locations are: City of Winnipeg – St. James Civic Centre, Centro Caboto Centre, Rady Jewish Community Centre, and the YMCA-YWCA (Elmwood-Kildonan branch). The two original sites remain at the YMCA-YWCA (south branch) and the Wellness Institute.

The two main components include 45 to 60 minutes of physical exercise led by a trained physical activity program leader, and 45 to 60 minutes of mentally stimulating activities.

Less than half of Manitoba’s older adults get the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week.
