Winnipeg Police Officer Dragged by Vehicle During Check Stop

Winnipeg Police CrestA Winnipeg police officer was injured Saturday night after being dragged by a vehicle while conducting a roadside check stop.

Police were operating their RoadWatch program following the Winnipeg Blue Bombers game on Waverley Street near Lake Crest Road on the outskirts of Waverley Heights.

Police say at around 8:25 p.m. an officer administered a breathalyzer test to a man driving a Buick Century. After the driver had failed the test, he sped off while the officer tried to stop him from fleeing. The officer was dragged along the roadway, resulting in non-life threatening injuries.

The driver then collided with a median on Lake Crest Road, causing significant damage. He abandoned the vehicle in the 1200 block of Chancellor Drive and fled on foot.

The officer was treated in hospital for his injuries and released.

No arrests have been made.
