A Grade 9 student who accidentally stabbed his friend at a Winnipeg school on Monday will not be charged.

Police were called to Westdale Junior High at around 2:20 p.m. for a report of a student being stabbed in the upper body.

Police say the two 14-year-old friends were in industrial arts class working on an assignment involving an X-Acto knife when the suspect flipped the knife in the direction of the other boy, striking him in the upper body.

First aid was immediately given to the boy by school staff. The suspect was held in another part of the school for police.

The victim has since been treated and released for a minor injury.

Police say the incident was not criminal in nature and involved a poor choice of horseplay.

The youth involved and his family have been cooperative and are remorseful, police say.
