The Manitoba arm of the Canadian Federation of Students is speaking out against the provincial government’s decision to help fund the University of Manitoba’s Front and Centre campaign.
Premier Greg Selinger announced last week $150 million to help the campaign reach its $500 million goal.
Michael Barkman, chairperson for the Canadian Federation of Students, said the post-secondary funding should fulfill immediate and critical needs of U of M students.
“This ‘investment’ however, will do nothing to address the decreased accessibility and quality of education facing students at the University of Manitoba,” Barkman said.
“Manitoba’s public post-secondary institutions should not need to engage in unaccountable crowdfunding projects to accomplish their mandate.”
The Front and Centre philanthropic campaign is aimed mainly at funding capital projects. To date, it has raised $365,294,636.
