Winnipeg Police CrestA Winnipeg Transit driver was assaulted Tuesday evening by an alleged intoxicated man who threw change at the receptacle upon boarding.

The driver asked the man if he had the correct fare, as some of the coins hit the floor. That’s when Winnipeg police say the driver was assaulted in the upper body, causing both of them to fall to the floor of the bus.

The suspect then fled on the foot, but witnesses were able to provide police with his location.

Police located the man at around 6 p.m. in the 400 block of Spence Street. It was also determined the same man had threatened to stab two people in the 400 block of Balmoral Street. No one was injured.

William James Weiss, 26, of Winnipeg has been charged with assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon.

He remains in custody.
