At least a dozen cruiser cars responded to a field near the intersection at around 1:15 p.m. Police say they originally made contact with the man driving a vehicle at around 12:30 p.m. before the shooting occurred.
Witnesses reported multiple shots were fired at a male suspect inside a vehicle near the south side of Lipsett Hall, an abandoned building part of the former Kapyong Barracks.
“We were acting on information with respect to a vehicle and an occupant of that vehicle,” Const. Jason Michalyshen said.
“Based on the information that was presented to us, the appropriate level of resources — police units — were dispatched and involved.”
First aid was administered to the victim before he was taken to hospital. No officers were injured during the incident.
Photos from the scene appeared to show a white four-door Audi with multiple bullet holes in its body and glass. A police cruiser was also seen with its driver’s side window shot out.
Police say the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified.
