Man Drops Stolen Gun Trying to Evade Winnipeg Police

Winnipeg Police CrestA 20-year-old man is facing weapons charges after dropping a gun and ammunition while attempting to run from Winnipeg police.

Officers were on patrol Friday night in the area of Wellington Avenue and Simcoe Street when they spotted a known man trying to run away.

The suspect ran between two houses and dropped an unloaded Smith and Wesson .357 handgun with six rounds of .38 calibre ammunition.

Police determined the gun had been stolen from a Winnipeg residence in 1989.

Jesse James Whyte of Winnipeg has been charged with several weapons-related offences. He remains in custody.
