Winnipeg Police CrestA woman was killed early Monday after the vehicle she was in crashed into the Buhler Centre building in downtown Winnipeg.

Police began their pursuit of the vehicle at around 1:20 a.m. after it was suspected to be involved in a commercial robbery late Sunday on Dale Boulevard. The SUV was spotted in the area of Empress Street and Portage Avenue.

The vehicle fled eastbound on Portage Avenue, but officers lost sight of it due to its high rate of speed. The vehicle lost control a short time later and crashed at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Good Street.

The 27-year-old woman in the vehicle was taken to hospital in critical condition where she later died. A 30-year-old man fled the scene on foot, but was later arrested nearby.

Police and the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba continue to investigate.

As of 11 a.m., all eastbound lanes of Portage Avenue remain closed at the scene.
