A traditional blessing and smudging ceremony from an aboriginal elder will kick start the first ever University of Winnipeg Wesmen Indigenous Day this afternoon.
The Wesmen, along with the Aboriginal Student Council, will celebrate the day to coincide with their basketball games against the Brandon University Bobcats.
“As part of the University of Winnipeg, we wish to welcome and embrace the indigenous members of the university family and the indigenous community as a whole,” said Wesmen’s interim athletic director Dave Crook.
“We hope that this event is the start of something special and jointly between the ASC and ourselves find other ways to grow our relationship”
A traditional drum ceremony and dancing will also take place throughout the game.
The women’s game starts at 2 p.m. and the men play at 4 p.m. Both games are at the Duckworth Centre.
