Indigenous women’s advocate Nahanni Fontaine is seeking the Manitoba NDP nomination in the constituency of St. Johns.

Fontaine has been the special advisor for aboriginal women’s issues for the Indigenous Issues Committee for the province.

Fontaine is looking to fill the spot recently vacated by longtime NDP MLA Gord Mackintosh, who announced last week he would not seek re-election.

“It is important to elect strong social justice advocates to continue the legacy and work of Gord Mackintosh and many others like him who believe passionately in protecting our most vulnerable,” Fontaine said in a statement.

Manitoba voters go to the polls on April 19.
