Banners celebrating the Year of the Monkey will begin going up Friday in Chinatown.

The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ collaborated with the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre to run a design competition in finding the banner’s new design.

“The banner competition is a wonderful tradition that provides local artists with the opportunity to showcase their talent and enhance Chinatown’s vibrant streetscape,” said Stefano Grande, executive director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.

Zhiling Liu, a graphic design student at the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, is this year’s competition winner.

Her banner design was jury-selected out of 34 entries for its strong visually artistic, symbolic and engaging image.

The installations will take place at 9 a.m. Friday on King Street and work their way down Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue.
