Winnipeg Man Charged in Apartment Arson

Winnipeg Police CrestA Winnipeg man is facing charges after a fire in the 600 block of McGee Street on Wednesday.

Fire broke out in the multi-unit building just before 4:30 a.m., where several people self-evacuated safely.

Police took Lawrence Patrick Akerley, 45, into custody at the scene. He has been charged with arson causing damage to property, arson with disregard for human life and possession of incendiary material.

Damage to the building is estimated at $500,000.

Akerley remains in custody.
