Winnipeg police believe a fire that destroyed South Pointe Terrace on Waverley Street last fall was arson.

The fire broke out in the 2400 block of Waverley Street on October 21 at around 2:30 a.m.

The fire destroyed the apartment complex, which was one of three buildings being constructed by Seymour Pacific and operated by Broadstreet Properties.

Nearby homes had to be evacuated as a result, but no one was injured. Damage was estimated at $3.5 million.

Police say their investigation found another construction site located at 100 Southview Crescent was broken into during the same time frame as the fire. Police say there was evidence of drinking at the site, as well as an accelerant.

Police say they believe those responsible for the break-in may be associated with the Waverley fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6813 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
