A 16-year-old boy is facing a list of charges after allegedly assaulting a man with a machete in downtown Winnipeg on Wednesday.
Police say the 21-year-old victim was originally confronted by the suspect earlier this month near Confusion Corner. He was accused of having associations with a rival street gang and was chased. He was able to flee the area unharmed.
The two encountered each other again on Wednesday at around 8:30 p.m. in the area of Portage Avenue and Vaughan Street. The suspect approached the victim and allegedly swung a machete at him, but missed and hit a nearby car. The victim had texted a friend to pick him up fearing for his safety.
Police say the victim was chased and assaulted multiple times with the machete, causing serious injuries. He remains in stable condition.
The suspect was found in the 400 block of St. Mary Avenue and arrested.
The teen has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, two counts of possession of a weapon, possession of marijuana, and two counts of failing to comply with a sentence.
He remains in custody.
