Former Winnipegger Nia Vardalos scored big at the weekend box office with her long-awaited sequel.

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” took in $18.1 million in North American box office sales. Another $8 million was raked in internationally.

Vardalos returns as Toula in the sequel to her hit 2002 comedy. Her parents have to tie the knot again after they realize their marriage certificate was never signed.

The sequel sets a record for the most increase in ticket sales on an opening weekend following an original release of a movie.

Vardalas grew up and was born in Winnipeg. Some of her other credits include “Connie and Carla,” “My Life in Ruins,” and the spinoff series “My Big Fat Greek Life.”
