A phishing scam to obtain personal and financial details has been targeting Winnipeg businesses.

Companies have been reporting calls from the fictitious “Winnipeg Business Development Office.” The caller on the other end does not immediately identify himself, but suspicious call-takers have described him to have an Indian accent and very difficult to understand.

The call begins with questions asking if the business is looking to move or relocate. Once engaged, the caller attempts to solicit further information from the company, such as how many staff are on their payroll, their annual revenue and other internal information.

The caller ID is 1-888-001-0716. A Google search of that phone number turns up several warnings of the scam from Canadian chamber of commerce outlets and the Better Business Bureau.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
