Two Winnipeg police officers are being investigated after a 19-year-old woman alleges she was assaulted while in custody.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba began their investigation on April 20 — one day after the woman formally complained to police.
The IIU says the investigation stems from an October 17 incident, where the woman claims a male officer punched her in the cheek and a second male officer stomped on her knee. She claims to have sustained three torn ligaments as a result of her encounter with police. She sought treatment at Health Sciences Centre and was later released.
The woman became involved with police while detained for being intoxicated.
The IIU has determined it’s in the public intereste to investigate the woman’s claim.
No further information has been released.
