The Assiniboine Park Zoo is monkeying around with the return of white-handed gibbons.

A gibbon exhibit will open later this year after being transformed from the current Pavilion of the Lions enclosure. One male and one female will be housed inside.

“Assiniboine Park Zoo was home to gibbons for many years and they were always a favourite with our visitors,” said Gary Lunsford, head of zoological operations at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

“We’re pleased to have this opportunity to create and maintain a spacious and naturalistic home for this species, and we are very happy to be welcoming them back to our zoo family.”

White-handed gibbons are small, arboreal apes found mainly in tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia.

The gibbons will live inside throughout the winter while the outdoor portion of the exhibit is constructed with an anticipated spring 2017 opening date.
