Charges Laid Against Man in RCMP Shooting Near Portage la Prairie

RCMP Crest LogoCharges have been laid against a man in an officer-involved shooting near Portage la Prairie on Thursday.

The incident began when an officer noticed an erratic driver and attempted to pull him over. The driver refused to pull over and was stopped by the RCMP vehicle.

During the altercation, the suspect was shot and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Sgt. Bert Paquet wouldn’t say what prompted the shooting but says a firearm was found in the suspect’s car.

Carl Devin Beaulieu, 30, of Winnipeg has been charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, unauthorized use and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and four counts of mischief.

Beaulieu will appear in Portage la Prairie court on May 24.

The shooting is being reviewed by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
