A 55-year-old Winnipeg taxicab driver faces charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a male passenger and then offering him money to dismiss his complaint to police.
Police say the 22-year-old caught a cab on May 15 at around 11:30 p.m. in the Broadway area.
He was driven to a secluded area in the 1100 block of Main Street where the driver made inappropriate sexual advances toward him. The man declined and was sexually assaulted a short time later.
The man was eventually driven to his destination and contacted police.
The driver learned of the ongoing police investigation and attended the victim’s residence on May 24 to offer him money to abandon his complaint against him. The man declined and contacted police again.
Mohinder Sarkaria, 55, has been charged with sexual assault and attempting to obstruct justice. He remains in custody.
UPDATE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the victim as a woman, based on information provided to the media by Winnipeg police.
