Bench Design Competition Launched for Winnipeg’s Trails

A new place-making and design competition is coming up with new ways for cyclists and pedestrians to rest along Winnipeg’s growing trail network.

BENCHmark is a partnership between StorefrontMB and the Winnipeg Trails Association. The competition will result in the creation of two permanent benches that challenge the idea of the ‘common’ bench and become local landmarks.

“Winnipeg’s network of pathways and protected bike lanes are becoming very popular, very quickly and Winnipeg deserves the best,” said Anders Swanson, coordinator of the Winnipeg Trails Association.

“We are due for an upgrade and incorporating new ideas is always important — whether it’s more connectivity, better bike path design, safer intersections, increased lighting, inspiring public art or the thousands of benches we are going to need along the way for people to stop and rest.”

Ideas from BENCHmark will be unveiled in September at The Forks. A call for proposals form can be accessed by visiting storefrontmb.ca. The deadline to submit your design is July 6 at 4 p.m. CT.
