A trail at Assiniboine Park has reopened after an extensive renovation.

A ribbon was cut Friday on the Terry Fox Fitness Trail located in the southeast area of Assiniboine Park. Work on the 1 km trail included landscaping repair and rehabilitation work, and now boasts 12 pieces of modern outdoor fitness equipment with instructional signage.

The trail runs through the area that will eventually include the outdoor portions of Canada’s Diversity Gardens, part of the park’s $200 million redevelopment campaign.

“With so much usage over the years, the trail and its equipment were in desperate need of repair and we’re pleased to be re-opening it today thanks to the support and donations from the community,” said Gerald Dieleman, project director, Canada’s Diversity Gardens at Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

The University of Manitoba Bison women’s soccer team was the first group of people to run the trail.

Approximately 100 young trees were also planted along the length of the trail. The cost of refurbishment was $115,000, raised by community donations and lead donor National Leasing.
