Police Arrest Winnipeg Man After Soliciting Sex on Social Media

Winnipeg Police CrestWinnipeg police have arrested a man they say attempted to meet up with a 15-year-old girl for sex.

The man had advertised on social media Wednesday wanting to meet “young” women for sexual encounters.

An undercover officer posed as the teen and began exchanging text messages with the suspect. He made arrangements to meet her and offered money in exchange for sexual acts.

Derek Smart, 38, was arrested Thursday and charged with luring a person under 16 and obtaining sexual services from a person under 18.

He remains in custody.

In another incident, police arrested a man on Thursday after finding child pornography on electronic devices in a St. Boniface home.

Steve Suomu, 49, has been charged with possession and accessing child pornography.

He also remains in custody.
