August 8, 2016 7:04 AM | Sports

More than 700 of Manitoba’s young athletes gathered in Steinbach Sunday to kick off the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.

From August 7-13, 12 different sports will be represented at the Games, which is the province’s larger ongoing multi-sport event.

A total of 1,700 athletes will compete, with the first event competitions set to get underway today.

“You represent the future of sport in Manitoba, and the next wave of excellence that we look forward to cheering for, not only at these Games but in future national and international stages,” said Sport Manitoba interim CEO Laurel Read, reminding athletes of the many success stories of the Games’ alumni.

The closing ceremonies will take place Saturday, August 13 at 2:30 p.m.
