Stony Mountain Institution was placed into lockdown Tuesday morning.

The medium and maximum security units at the Manitoba prison went into lockdown at around 9 a.m to allow staff to conduct an “exceptional search.”

The prison says the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.

Visitors to the prison have been suspended until the search is suspended.

The Correctional Service of Canada says normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.
