Two Brandon police officers have been charged after an investigation by Winnipeg police stemming from an assault complaint.
Police say they were asked by provincial justice officials to investigate the allegation in January 2015 after the complainant said he was assaulted by a Brandon officer at a local hotel bar on November 22, 2014.
Winnipeg police completed their investigation in January of this year.
Sgt. Dallas Lockhart has been charged with obstructing justice and obstructing a police officer. Const. Shane Stephenson has been charged with one count of obstructing justice.
Both men are 20-year members of the Brandon Police Service.
Brandon police released their own statement Friday, saying the complainant had a family relationship with another Brandon police officer.
“The Brandon Police Service takes allegations of this nature very seriously,” the statement said. “The public can be assured that the Brandon Police Service has taken and will continue to take the necessary steps to maintain confidence in the Police Service.”
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave and are scheduled to appear in Brandon court at a later date.
