Brandon Police Service CrestBrandon police have a man in custody after he allegedly shot another man and then tossed the weapon into a dumpster Saturday evening.

Police were called at around 5:40 p.m. to the report of shots fired after two men had an altercation in the street.

Officers attended, but couldn’t locate either of the men, nor could determine where the shots came from.

At around 6 p.m., the Brandon Regional Health Centre contacted police to report a victim had come in with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was conscious and was able to provide police with a description of the shooter.

At around 6:22 p.m., someone called 911 reporting that a man was hiding inside a downtown church because he had “just shot someone.” He was taken into custody a short time later.

Police say the victim was shot once in the left side of his torso and had the bullet removed by staff at the hospital. He did not require surgery and was released.

A .22 calibre revolver handgun was found in a dumpster by police in the rear lane of the 300 block between 9 Street and 10 Street.

A 24-year-old Brandon man, who was on a recognizance for previous drug charges, was arrested and charged.
