Winnipeg police have confirmed the drug seized earlier this month is carfentanil.
Police found 1,477 blotter tabs of the fatal drug while executing a search warrant on September 12 in a West End hotel. The tabs have an estimated street value of approximately $30,000.
A 37-year-old man has been arrested and faces numerous drug-related charges.
Carfentanil is an analogue of the synthetic opioid analgesic fentanyl, and is one of the most potent opioids known. It has potency approximately 10,000 times that of morphine, and 100 times that of fentanyl. The lethal dose of pharmaceutical fentanyl is 2mg.
