The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has launched two separate investigations after allegations two people were injured while being arrested by Winnipeg police officers.
A man claimed his arm was sprained or dislocated while he was being arrested on February 7, 2016. He visited the Health Sciences Centre after his arrest and has been off work since then due to the injury. The Winnipeg Police Service had been investigating, but the IIU has taken over after determining the incident is the result of a serious injury.
A second person came forward after an October 4, 2016 arrest for uttering threats. The man filed a complaint on October 17, alleging his hand was injured during an arrest, requiring surgery.
The IIU will investigate both allegations and report their findings at a later date.
