Families in Fort McMurray lost everything when the wildfires of May 2016 ravaged the northern Alberta community.
Residents living in the city are still working to rebuild their lives, their homes and return to a sense of normal, especially with Christmas fast approaching.
WestJet, never one to disappoint with its annual Christmas video, surprised the community in late November and invited those affected by the wildfires to a Snowflake Soiree.
“Christmas Miracle: Fort McMurray Strong” shows how the Calgary-based airline treated families to an unforgettable evening full of surprises. Hundreds of little gift boxes containing personalized family portraits and WestJet flight vouchers fell from the sky by way of parachute above the party as country star Johnny Reid performance “Silent Night.”
“This year, we wanted Christmas to mean just a little bit more for the residents of Fort McMurray,” said Richard Bartrem, WestJet vice-president, marketing communications.
“This year’s Christmas miracle was an opportunity for WestJet to do what we do best — help connect a community, celebrate the season and bring a smile to peoples’ faces.”
WestJet’s Christmas Miracle videos have been viewed more than 54 million times since the first one was released in 2012.
