Participants in Festival du Voyageur’s 2012 Beard Growing Contest (TED GRANT / CHRISD.CA FILE)
Between Movember, Decembeard and now the upcoming Festival du Voyageur Beard Growing Contest, many Winnipeg men are rocking the scruffy look.
Four categories will determine the best beard: clean shaven, open, voyageur beard (wild and woolly) and novelty (groomed moustache or beard).
Participants can register December 8 between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Festival du Voyageur office, 233 Provencher Boulevard, by arriving cleanly shaven. Staff will take a picture to document the fresh shave. Alternatively, you can register December 9 at Waltz On In Barber Shop, 68 Sherbrooke Street, between 9 a.m. and noon. Men must arrive unshaven and will receive a free straight razor shave. Advance bookings are required by calling the shop at (204) 999-0417.
During the 10-week competition, participants will be asked to raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Women can compete in the “open” category, meaning they can show their originality by crafting their own beard.
Registration is free, however, participants will have to pay the entry fee for Voyageur Park ($25 for the day or $65 for the entirety of the festival). Participants who will have collected more than $100 in donations will receive $25 on the day of the competition.
Festival du Voyageur is February 16-25, 2018.
